7 Steps to Travel Beyond the Armchair

7 Steps to Travel Beyond the Armchair

Get your passport, take these 7 steps and travel.

Life is not lived on “if only”s and “what if”s.

Last week I saw “Death of a Salesman” and the above sentence formulated in my head. Willie Loman blamed others for his past yet pinned his future on their support. He didn’t understand life. He couldn’t take responsibility for it, nor could he control it.

Yet we must. And, of course, this got me thinking about travel. If we want to travel, whether short term or long, only we (you) can make it happen. This post is for those who need a little encouragement to stop dreaming and start going. I give you…

A 7 step guide to travel beyond the armchair.

  1. Dream. Dream wildly. The bigger the dream the better the trip.
  2. Talk. Tell people about your dreams, what you want to do and why. The more you explain it to others the more real it will become and the better you’ll understand why you must go.
  3. Schedule. Carve out the time that you need. You may only need your regular vacation days or you may need a leave of absence. Be creative and you can negotiate what you require in life. (Oh, did I say life, of course, I meant travel?)
  4. Save. Saving for travel is penny-pinching with a huge prize. Read “Saving Travel Money”.
  5. Research. Expand your dream by reading blogs on your destination. You’ll discover, through others, just how fantastic your trip will be.
  6. Plan. Bare-bones logistics is all you really need (though I respect those who pull together more). You need to know where you will stay the first night and how you will manage your money. Beyond that, planning is all about your comfort level.
  7. Go. Always have your passport ready. Buy your plane/train tickets. Book your accommodation. Go.

Travel is really not that difficult. Travel is truly fun and rewarding. Go and enjoy!

Don’t miss the moment.

Nice idea. Too many people blame circumstance for not fulfilling their dreams. Every once in a while we all need a reminder to think big, dream big and rely on ourselves to make our lives more fulfilling.

Thank you! This is what I desperately need. I’m working on the dream, talk, save, and research parts now.

Being a big fan of literature I enjoyed the contrast between adventures and Willy Lohman. Great words of advice here.
