If you’re a travel blogger I hope that you’ll have a look at the Global Bloggers Network. I developed it along with Keith of the Velvet Escape. It offers our ‘wish list’ of services and resources — the support that we think will help us all improve and grow our travel blogs. (more…)

The Future of the Solopreneur Posts

Happy New Year everyone.

You may have noticed that I have not published a Solopreneur post for the last few weeks. Well, that’s not just due to the holiday season; I’ve actually been working very hard through this time. I’ve been developing a project with Keith of the Velvet Escape – a project that will replace the Solopreneur section of this site. (more…)

Solopreneurs: Cashflow Trumps Profits for Start Up.

Businesses can last for years without making a profit but die very quickly with negative cashflow.

My first business is proof. The business started in 1989, less than a year before the economy slipped into a recession. We took a loss on the first year. No surprise. And the second year. Yikes. In fact, it was not until year five, that the company both paid my partner and me a decent salary and made a small profit. We survived for five years on cashflow alone. (more…)

Solopreneurs: Even shy people can schmooze.

For those solo travelers who are solopreneurs and those who want to be,
here is the every-other-week business post.

If this isn’t for you, just wait a day or two and another solo travel post will be coming your way.

I have written about networking and schmoozing many times in my business writing practice, but always from a theoretical perspective. It’s something I’ve never managed to do well myself. I’ve always been intimidated with the thought of working a room – until last week. (more…)

I believe that there is more security in being self-employed than being employed. Not only is profitability largely in my control, I also can’t be fired. Yes, clients can let me go but, assuming I have multiple clients, it’s unlikely I’ll lose all my income at once. As an employee, one firing is all it takes. (more…)

Solopreneurs: What’s your end game.

Apologies everyone. I’ve been organizing a trip so I’m a bit delinquent in delivering a solopreneur post. But, better late than never. Here you go…

In ’98, my husband and I sold our business. What we actually sold was a database and a name — our customer list and goodwill. That’s it. They got no computers, buildings or products. It was an interesting, sometimes painful but ultimately financially rewarding process. It was our end game from the start. What’s yours? (more…)

PART II: CONTENT IS KING

To get great traffic results from Google, your website needs high quality content that uses your chosen key word phrases. However, Google and search engine optimization (SEO) should not dictate how your content is written. SEO is a secondary consideration; your readers’ needs must come first. (more…)

Snap up the Shout Outs: PR for the Solopreneur

A post on being a solopreneur is not of interest to all but it has proven to be popular with many.
So here’s the plan. I’ll add one solopreneur post

every other Saturday. On those weekends, I’ll also run a travel post on Sunday.

The weeks in between, I’ll send the solopreneur post via email. Please sign up.

Next week via newsletter: Search Engine Optimization and the Net’s Holy Grail: Page One of Google

Public relations is often touted as fabulous, free marketing. Well, it can be fabulous but it’s not free. It takes time and, as we all know, time is money. If you plan to add public relations to your long list of to-dos, use tactics that get you that coveted coverage efficiently. (more…)

Solopreneur:
a tale of two companies

Being a solopreneur is not just about what you know but also how you think.

This blog is essentially for travel. Yet the response to the first solopreneur post was amazing. So, to meet the demand without diluting the focus of Solo Traveler, the plan is to publish one solopreneur post every other Saturday and deliver another in the weeks in between via newsletter.

Next week via newsletter: Business Models Everywhere: plenty to make you think.

SOLOPRENEUR: a tale of two companies.

Is there any single right business for you to start? I don’t think so. But there are many wrong ones.

Just because you have a good business idea doesn’t mean that you should pursue it. Your business idea also has to suit you. As long as it does, as long as it feeds you in enough ways, you will feed it with all the energy, creativity and sweat you have to offer. (more…)

People often assume that, because I travel solo, I am an extrovert. I’m not. What I am, is independent – a trait that introverts and extroverts can share.

This independent streak has been with me a long time. It has shown itself in how I live and how I’ve made my living. I’ve been gainfully self-employed since 1986. I’ve been a freelancer, an entrepreneur and now, a solopreneur. (more…)
