Confessions of a Solo BoBo

 Confessions of a Solo BoBo

Me and my shadow.

I suspected it when I traveled solo down the Blues Highway staying at some beautiful four and five star hotels yet visiting some pretty seedy bars.  It was confirmed when a thrill ran up and down my spine as I bought my backpack for my solo trip to Chile.

I am a BoBo – a Bourgeois/Bohemian.

I’m middle aged. I’m middle class. I like a few luxuries. But I also like to believe that there is a bit of the Bohemian in me that can discard the trappings of a middle-middle existence and take pleasure in whatever is presented.

According to Wikipedia:

Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic or literary pursuits. In this context, Bohemians can be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds.”

Interesting. Wanderers, adventurers or vagabonds. In the company of like-minded people. Few permanent ties. This all matches my travel style.

At home I can can be somewhat traditional, dare I say Bourgeois. But when I travel, I like to take a less conventional approach. Some day I may raise this approach to an art form and maybe even live it full time.

Until then, I am a BoBo.

I love this post! Made me realize I’m a self-confessed travel BoBo! I love the fact that other people find sole female travelers unconventional enough, then they see you in an offbeat locale. This post just tickled me to doing something unconventional today! :)

I’d like to share one of my posts as a proud solo BoBo here: http://www.offbeatwanders.com/worldwide-travel-because-solo-female-travelers-of-the-world-got-the-swag/

you are still adventurous! I find i take the safe travel route: explore on my own but in countries where we have extradition!

The description sounds as if it fits me. I can adapt to different surroundings – hostels to 5-star hotels, city to countryside, hole-in-the-wall food joints to Michelin-rated restaurants, etc. – quite alright.

First of all, I’m also a’bobo’ but I should warn you, for those of portuguese speaking “bobo” means silly.

I think of myself as an old broad gypsy who lusts after the wonders of Mother Nature, and loves to share a Jack and Coke with fellow travelers around a campfire outside my RV

I like the word–and it matches me as well. Even if I had the $$ to always stay at luxurious places, there is a sort of deadening/distancing effect to that sort of travel. I also prefer to travel alone–so are we SoBobos?
