The Earth Oven: Hangi

Last year while I was touring around the south island of New Zealand on my own, I had an opportunity to attend a Hangi – this is a traditional way of cooking food in a covered pit using hot rocks… derived from the wonderful Maori culture – a culture I am quite fond of and fascinated by.

If you are a newbie to Maori culture, there is an amazing book called Whale Rider - it was also made into a movie. It is a wonderful story about a young girl finding her place in Maori culture in a modern time.

Have you been to New Zealand? Please share your experiences! If you haven’t been, it is an amazing place to visit. I will be writing more about it soon….

Until next time,
L
