Solo Traveler

Posted on December 31, 2009 - by Janice

Happy New Year. Happy travels.
Sundance. Chile. New Brunswick.

Solo travel stories

This past week I have really been focused on my travels of 2010 as I’m sure many of you have as well.

Here’s my potential line-up.

Park City, Utah.
I have been accepted as a volunteer for the Sundance Film Festival. Remember my posts on the Toronto International Film Festival? Yes, film is one of my things so to work at Sundance makes, in my mind, a perfect solo travel adventure. I’ll be thrown into a community of volunteers so lonely won’t ever be an issue and I’ll get to see films for free. Wow. I’ll also sneak in a day or two of skiing. The posts will be many.

Santiago, Chile
I have been offered a condo in Santiago for March. How great is that! I’ve just started planning my trip to Chile and I’m already a bit crazy. There’s so much to see. I need months there rather than weeks. Regardless. It will be fabulous. I’ll connect into a neighborhood in the city, go hiking in the mountains, relax by the ocean…

Canadian Maritime Provinces.
I’ll drive if I have to but I’m hoping that this will be another train trip. I want to swing through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI in June (I’ll save Newfoundland for a separate trip. I love the rock too much to rush it.). I’ll go to a family reunion in N.B. on the way home.

I have a slot to fill in the Fall
After a summer at home and the Toronto Film Fest in September, I have a slot to fill. I’ve always wanted to go north to see the Northern Lights in October when there’s supposed to be best but, we’ll see.

I think I have enough to do planning these trips for now.

Where are you planning to travel in 2010?

In my mind there are two main benefits of volunteering. 1. Your thrust into a community of people who love film. As a solo traveler, that’s a huge bonus. 2. You get to see films for free.

But, in addition, you get to be part of the buzz of the festival and usually get some good swag. Unfortunately, transportation and lodging are not on offer.

Love your ideas! After wintering four years in Florida, I’m ready to spend some of that time “on the road” as you do…love the volunteering at film festivals idea, as I, too, am a film aficionado! Any tips on that? Do they provide accomodations or how did you go about getting them?

Wow, Janice, that is a great plan. I love Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, but haven’t made it to PEI or New Brunswick yet.

Currently I am planning a winter trip to Death Valley during a new moon (no moon)…. photographing the place at NIGHT.
