Pinchos: Perfect for Solo Travelers

This is a fabulous sharp cheese, warmed with a square of a marmalade type compote on top. Fantastic!

Tapas.

Spain is famous for their tapas. Think crowded, smokey bars and people sharing small dishes of food. Sometimes they’re even free.

But for the solo traveler, this is not always ideal. Fortunately, on my recent trip to Girona, Spain, I discovered that the bars are no longer smokey and furthermore, pinchos are a great alternative for solo travelers.

Pinchos (pronounced peen-chos with the emphasis on the first syllable) are sometimes spelled pintxos. They come from the Basque region and refer to the fact that small portions of meat, fish or cheese are served on a piece of bread and pierced with a toothpick. Some, such as olives, come in a small dish.

Browse the bar that usually offers a wide variety of pinchos, take whatever you want to your seat, visit as often as you want and, when it comes to the bill, your server (who actually only took care of your drinks) will count up the toothpicks and small dishes, and bring you your bill.

The food was consistently good at the few places I went to. Pinchos are worth seeking out in Spain. Just look at this wonderful food.

There are a lot of places in Spain where you can get free food with your drink. It is called “tapa” (cover).
The origin has some versions, the most heard is when the Catholic Monarchs went to Andalusia and asked for a glass of wine in a bar. There were too many flies, so they asked for something to cover the glass, then, the waiter put a slice of ham on it.

I’ve been in Spain a month and discovered pinchos too! Love the variety of options and it’s just about the right size…a glass of wine, a few pinchos, and that’s all you need for dinner. Love the sliced potatoes slowly ‘boiled’ in olive oil. OMG.
