we were in ambleside for new years eve 2009 and spent the night in the golden rule and the unicorn-mik was in great form and although i am from newcastle upon tyne,a city noted for its nightlife,this was the best new years eve i,d had in years.
the unicorn is always a must when visiting ambleside ,and i will be back there for a weekend in july,and again for new years 2010.

Before reading this story, I’ve never thought of entering a pub/bar solo. I may try the way your tips suggested. I wonder if English is my second language, will I still be able to meet some like-minded local people? Such a challenge~~

I like your strategy of going back to the same place every night, so people get to know you, and you them. I tend to move around a lot, sampling different places, when I travel, which is a totally different experience. I think I might try your way one of these trips. Sounds like fun.

ah, there’s nothing like the local bar/pub/dive!!! nowhere on earth can you find a more interesting (and, ultimately welcoming) mix of people. i’ve moved extensively around the states, and one of the first things i always do is hunt down my local watering hole!
