Solo with Salvador Dali – Figueres, Spain
Spain has a wonderful way of shifting our perspective on the world. This amazing country has given us Gaudi, Picasso and, of course, Dali. The latter being, in my mind, the most playful of the group and a joy whether you know art, or not.
The Dali Theatre Museum is located in Figueres, Spain, the birthplace of Salvador Dali. The building was designed by Dali himself and, as such, is considered the largest surrealist object in the world. And it houses one of the largest collections of his work in the world making the day trip from Barcelona well worthwhile.
The permanent collection ranges from the stunning simplicity of The Basket of Bread to the delightfully playful Face of Mae West Which Can Be Used as an Apartment. This photo (right) captures the work as viewed from a gallery made for the purpose. All aspects of Mae West’s face are made of fully functional furniture and decor — an extraordinary piece.
Train, bus or car will get you the 100km from Barcelona to Figueres to enjoy this magical city and its gallery. I wish that pictures could capture the feeling of this museum but, no. You’re going to have to go yourself for the full experience.
