Solo is the Downward Dog of Travel

Solo is the Downward Dog of TravelFinding focus and stilling my mind is definitely my greatest challenge in yoga. It’s also one of the main the reasons that I go. It is important to stop thinking sometimes and just be.

The other day I was in Glory’s yoga class and my mind took off. I noticed. Brought it back. And it promptly wandered off again. On the upside, I found that I was composing a post for Solo Traveler. Somewhere into my 6th or 7th downward dog of the class I got to thinking:

“solo, is the downward dog of travel.”

So, I give you seven ways that solo travel is like a downward dog.

Just as the downward dog…

1. …takes time for the novice to find the proper position, solo travel requires a bit of time to develop skills to make it both fun and safe.
2. …stretches and works every aspect of your body, solo travel stretches and works your travel and social skills beyond the typical travel experience.
3. …is a meditative pose, solo travel gives you real opportunities for meditation and reflection.
4. …is a rejuvenating stretch, people are rejuvenated by solo travel and return to everyday life with new perspectives gained through many new connections.
5. …is physically demanding the longer the pose is held, solo travel can be more challenging the longer one is on the road.
6. …becomes a restful pose as the practice gets more difficult, solo travel offers opportunity for rest from the demands of others.
7. …is a work in progress, the solo traveler is always growing.

Hi, Excellent post. All of the points you make are right on the mark. I have been a solo travel for years, and yes it’s definitely more challenging (in a great way) then traveling with another (although that involves totally different challenges) or in a group.

Oh my. What a pleasure to meet you Aurelia. Maybe we can meet in person some time — at one of Glory’s classes perhaps? I see that your host is MTS, but maybe you’ll be in Toronto at some point. As Glory says at the end of every class… Peace, health and happiness – namaste.

Janice, Glory referred me to your website which I find very creative and helpful. It also reminds me of the many benefits of Yoga so I am now motivated to go back to it. As Glory’s sister I am not surprised that your creativity was stimulated in her Yoga class. All my life I have seen the positive way she has influenced people around her including her dedication, skills, and sincere caring for her yoga practice and all of her students.I look forward to returning to your website and all the best to you in the future both in your yoga practice and your travel business. Thank you, Aurelia

    - As a yoga enthusiast and solo traveler, I couldn’t agree more. How satisfying they both can be. Thanks for this great insight. Now I don’t feel as guilty either for wandering during class!
