Solo Travel to Conferences: the Granny Gathering in Swaziland
Traveling for a professional or business conference is a common form of solo travel for most people from 20 to 60. But that pleasure can continue long after retirement as shown by the Grandmother’s Gathering taking place in Swaziland May 7th and 8th.
In 2006 there was a Grandmother’s Gathering in Toronto with 100 grandmothers from Africa and 200 from Canada. Since then, the Steven Lewis Foundation has provided financial support for organizations supporting grandmothers and grandchildren in their care.
This year, 500 grandmothers will meet in Swaziland. Grandmothers are expected from across Africa as well as Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and many countries in Europe. The purpose is to devise means of supporting grandmothers as they care for their grandchildren due to the AIDS pandemic.
I applaud these senior travelers, solo or not.
