Languages spoken: Dutch, English
Reasons to go: Amsterdam has a fun, lively atmosphere. It is very easy to get around the city by tram, metro or bus. It was easy to spend an afternoon just watching bicycle traffic.
I felt very safe. My hotel shuttle driver was born in the US but had lived in Amsterdam for 30 years. He assured me that it was very safe returning to the hotel late at night.
The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum were enjoyable. The canals and the boats moored there were amazing. I spent a fun Saturday at the Noordermarkt in the Jordaan, a combination of farmers market and flea market.
