Reasons to go:  When I was planning a solo long weekend in Chicago it surprised me when friends would comment that they never thought of the city as a travel destination. Why wouldn’t you? Chicago has so much to offer: theatre, art, music, shopping, food and unending lakefront.

The city is easy to navigate with the transit system connecting right up to the airports. Downtown is about an hour’s journey from O’Hare and 30 minutes from Midway. Between rail and buses the city is a breeze to get around, especially if you have access to Google Maps while there.

There’s lots to do as a solo traveler as well. I went on a Segway tour of Grant Park and the lakefront, chilled out in a glass box on the side of the Willis Tower (though it will always be Sears Tower to me) 103 storeys above the ground, rode a hop-on-hop-off bus to get acquainted with the downtown core and spent a good bit of time shopping on the Golden Mile. If you’re at all interested in art be sure to set aside a few hours to check out the Art Institute of Chicago. Going it alone may even be the best strategy here because you can spend as much or as little time in each section as you like. Friends may have gotten bored with how long I found myself lost in the Van Gogh paintings.

There is also lots of live music, blues in particular and great restaurants. Try the deep dish pizza as it’s a pizza experience like no other. Chicago is also home to Steppenwolf, a renowned theatre troupe and The Second City, which has turned out countless comedy stars. Check out their offerings while you’re in town.

If you stay in the Loop or River North there will be lots of people around at night so I felt safe walking by myself between the subway station and my hotel. As with  any city be aware of your surroundings and try to stick to populated streets.

I would go back in a heartbeat.

Chicago is a really easy place to get around. Even a person like myself, who is not good with remembering my way  back to the start point, had no difficulties. As far as sightseeing goes, one can spend even a couple of hours just staring at the bean, especially if you go under it.

Thank you so much for this information.  I will be in Chicago for a conference in June and always have the evenings and nights free to explore.

Destinations like this are really not a tough trip for solo travelers, considering it has this city life that is a usual lifestyle of most people.

Tracy – You wouldn’t have to be solo if you came to Chicago. I’m a pretty good tour guide :)

Tracy, I’m a single traveler, too and I hit Chicago every year! It’s just the best and one of the friendliest places, ever! And a cross-country train ride…what a great series of posts that would be to read!

Chicago is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the US. I love just about everything about it, except that I don’t live on Mag Mile :)

The people are some of the nicest anywhere, the architecture is stunning, the layout of the CTA system is ridiculously easy to navigate and you get the shopping experience of NYC, without some of our prices.  The museums are world-class and then there’s Lake Michigan! Ok, can you tell that I love Chicago! Great destination post choice.

They have architecture boat rides on the Chicago River, architecture Walking tours with the Chicago Arch Center, Frank Lloyd Wright tours in Oak Park (easy to reach on the subway or Metra),a large Chinatown via the subway or boat, Greektown just west of the loop which has a new museum just to mention a few things. Also it’s the Magnificent Mile, not Golden Mile.

thank you for this!  i have been VERY seriously considering a cross-country train trip, and my first stop would be chicago.  i’d be solo and was wondering if it would be a good place to spend a few days alone.  i’m now thinking definitely!

    great photos, by the way!
