Quiet and peaceful rocky beaches are all over the island.

Reasons to go:  Hvar is beautiful and fascinating. Croatia is how I imagine Greece and Italy may have been to visit 50 years ago.   There are treasures to be found around every corner, but no tourist crowds.

I went to an abandoned village, a mountaintop shrine, some beautiful old churches with fabulous mosaics… and every time I was the only person there. It is, however, very easy to meet new people in Hvar.  The locals are very friendly and the main town is a hotspot for the Meds yachting community.

The square was a fun and friendly place to be every evening with lots of restaurants and bars. I travelled around comfortably by bike and bus – travelled from one end of the island to the other visiting the little picturesque villages and towns along the way.

Hvar prides itself on being an entirely self-sufficient island, and locals refer to it as Planet Hvar.

I found it very affordable – I went to a yoga retreat http://www.suncokretdream.net/  So it was all paid for in advance, and was a super bargain as far as Im concerned.    Evening and Tsipe took really good care of me – drove me around the island, showed be things off the beaten path, took me to the local restaurants, and cooked fabulous meals – everything grown and caught on the island !
(not to mention morning yoga in a different beautiful and peaceful location every day!!)
I think there are lots of options for accommodation …. I’m not sure about camping though.

Thanks for that – I gave it a 2 because Im always cautious !!  I certainly never felt in danger, but I have no idea about crime rates so I didn’t feel right giving it a full safety rating.

Nice post! I’ve always wanted to visit Croatia. How do prices (food & lodging) compare with other western European locations such as Spain or France?

Croatia is already on my list, but perhaps Hvar should be there specifically. Lovely photos!
