machu picchu Solo Travel Destination: Machu Picchu, Peru

The mystique of Machu Picchu.

Reasons to go: Hiram Bingham stumbled upon one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century—and what was named in 2007 as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu.

I had always dreamed of reaching Machu Picchu, but years of being bogged down with the humdrum, mundane routine of the rat race had seen my dream grow dimmer. Until, that is, I decided to finally quit my job in May 2011, and fly to South America to spend my 40th birthday at Machu Picchu.

Hey, they say life begins at 40, right?

There are so many articles written about Machu Picchu that I have nothing new to add except that it is simply amazing. Words do not do this place justice. You have to be there to soak in the scenery.

The 4 day hike in to Machu Picchu was breath taking, and at times – took my breath away!  I didn’t find the trek too crowded but I was lucky to be part of a small group.  Had an amazing experience and would be back in a heart beat, especially now that I have a better camera.
I love that you quit your job at 40 to follow your dream – I soon face that cross road and wonder if I will have the strength to do the same!  Life is too short for the mundane and humdrum…so inspiring that you got out there and lived it!  I lived it when I was out of university and yearn to do it again!  Watch out world….the clock is ticking!!!!  The only question is where to next!!!!

We did this in 2010 and found it an incredible experience!  Although some people will say its too busy, we found the trek and visit breathtaking and would highly recommend it!

I was in Machu Picchu last March, what a beautiful place! After you visit that place things look different.  I went solo and it was a great experience!  Cusco and Machu Picchu have tons of things to see and to do where, every step you take has a piece of history.
