Reasons to go: Medellin is currently going through a metamorphosis. It is coming out of a violent recent history and into a much more hopeful time. The people here are super welcoming to visitors as they have not had people travel here for some time because of the troubles they endured. They only just started receiving tourists about 5 – 10 years ago. The government has pumped money into education and art and safety and it is really an up and coming place to visit.
The city itself is beautiful, surrounded by mountains. Great architecture and design in the modern buildings. Great metro system. The people are friendly and helpful and really eager to have you love their city as they do and show you that it is not all “Pablo Escobar, cocaine and armed conflict.”
There is so much to do here, I have been here for 2 weeks and am still busy sightseeing everyday. It has everything!
I am a solo female traveler, 42 years old. I am sensible about where I travel. I have felt safe here and followed guidelines provided by the advice of the locals. I would highly recommend it as a place to travel solo.
I recommend staying outside of the tourist zone “Poblado” and renting a room in a B&B. I am staying at V.A.G. Ensuites, and it is amazing. Clean, affordable, and beautiful, with a great host. You won’t find better. I never want to leave!
