Solo Travel Destination: Tokyo, Japan
We are pleased to present a new Solo Travel Destination Post from Carola, a member of the Solo Travel Society on Facebook. Carola is from the United States, and submitted the following report about Tokyo. Do you have a solo travel destination that you would like to recommend? Submit your description here, along with a few photos, and share it with fellow travelers!
Solo travel rating: 1.5 (1 is easiest, 4 is most difficult. Please see chart below)
Languages spoken: Japanese, English
Reasons to go: Variety! Tokyo has it all: museums, markets, theater, music, festivals, shopping, and endless excellent restaurants. In fact, the city has been awarded more Michelin stars than any other.
Tokyo is a safe city for solo travelers with an excellent and efficient public transit system (though you may want to avoid it during rush hour). It is considered the most populated metropolis in the world, with the population standing somewhere around 13 million in the city core, and 35 million including the surrounding wards.
I particularly recommend all the antique markets at shrines and temples and the flea markets.
