Photo of Cube Hotel between exterior glass and exterior wall. Looking at it up close, I couldn't figure out why they designed it this way.

I may occasionally give my accommodation a  mention in passing but I rarely focus on it. But this time is an exception. When I was in the Zugspitz Arena in the Tyrol Alps of Austria as a guest of the tourism board, I stayed at the Cube Hotel Biberwier-Lermoos. This is a cool hotel in an amazing region that is perfect for solo travelers. This hotel deserves a destination post to itself. I loved it.

Reasons to go: The area is very safe – it is mostly a family destination which typically means safe. It offers skiing, snowboarding, hiking, rock climbing, tobogganing (winter and summer) – just about any outdoor activity you’d want to do is there. The area is probably best for my level of skiing (blue square according to the North America rating system) as there is not that much for the advanced skier. There are also good restaurants in the town.

The hotel, itself, is beautiful and designed for people to be social. As a solo traveler, you can get a single room at low season for 70 Euros a night. During high season (including ski season) it goes up to just over 100 Euros a night. It’s not cheap but I think it’s good value. Included with the room and its fantastic location are breakfast, dinner buffet, relaxation area including a Finnish sauna, fitness room and in the summer, some organized outdoor activities.

Don’t worry. This section will not turn into a promotion for hotels etc. As I say, this is just one that really struck my fancy.

The area is one of the best mountainbike areas in the Alps according to the German Road Association ADAC. I have been mountainbiking in the Zugspitz arena myself and it is fantastic. Have a look on http://www.zugspitzarena.com
