Your solo evening starts with a manicure and a martini.
When I travel solo, I don’t waste the evenings by staying in. I always manage to find activities that suit the solo experience. A few weeks ago, on my trip around Lake Ontario, I had a great night out in Kingston. Click here for my itinerary of the entire trip around the lake.
Cocktails at 7
At the recommendation of Holly, my hostess at the Rosemount Inn & Spa, my evening started at Tango on King Street. Every Wednesday night they offer a Martini and Manicure for $15. I had a Limedrop Martini. Ian Nicholls gave me the recipe.
- 1 oz Citrus Twist Vodka
- 1 oz Henkes Triple Sec
- Splash of Lime Juice
- Splash Bar Lme
- Shake over ice, serve in sugar rimmed Z stem glass garnished with a lime wheel.
Dinner at 8
Not even a block away from Tango is Le Chien Noir Bristro. This is one of the three restaurants I had my eye on before leaving on my trip. It was certainly highly regarded on Chowhound. But, when I was in Prince Edward County (my stop before Kingston) it was mentioned on a couple of occasions. So… Le Chien Noir it was.
As I was preparing to leave a Kingston couple (born and bred, I confirmed), Murdoch and Claire, stopped me to chat about their city. A highlight they didn’t want me to miss was the Kingston Brewing Company, known locally as the Brew Pub.
Wrap up the night at the Brew Pub
The Brew Pub has been around 25 years and is an institution in Kingston. The pub is known for the Welly-Boot-Chuck, an annual fundraiser in honor of buying new boots for the brewer, having its own curling rink in the back that has something to do with getting around some bi-law, and a visit from Chris Whyman, the Kingston Town Crier and a world champion, most Friday nights.
I popped over to the Brew Pub after Le Chien Noir. Again, it’s only a few blocks away. I found it buzzing with people but the bar itself was quite small and occupied. I wasn’t interested in sitting alone at a booth for a beer so I headed home, satisfied, that I had checked out a few of the top spots in Kingston.
