Excellent story!

I've used the Paris Greeter program and highly recommend it.

I have a friend in Reykjavik I met online in 2003 through a mutual textile interest we share, so that's definitely a great tip. I'm currently living in Australia, and we've since met in Santa Fe, New Mexico (textile conference) and 3 wks in Paris last year (my textile class I teach).

I have another friend I met online in 1998 through Journeywoman.com / HerMail.com (I was their Sydney connection).

I became her guide in Sydney, and we've since met in several places in the world. We've become best friends and still email every day.

So the benefits of finding people as guides can be far reaching ... who knows where it will lead?

Thx for great post!

Thanks Nora. I was hesitant to include them as, not having used either service myself, I wasn't certain they would qualify. Fantastic additions.

What great and creative recommendations! Let's not forget cultural exchange services like Hospitality Exchange, Couchsurfers, and the like. Some members don't have digs they can offer up but will instead show you the town if you contact them.
