Hi Ellery,

Yes, I'm concerned about leaving Kiah alone in the car, not so much in the hotel or B&B. I take some basic precautions:
1. Park the car next to a wall, or trees, somewhere shaded, and back in so that the dog is less visible in the back.
2. I make sure Kiah is in the back of the car, not sitting in the front driver's seat - not that I think she'll drive away, just that she's less visible in the back. Makes it easier that she's a 75lb Lab, and far less likely to scramble over into the front seat than, say, a Schnauzer. Maybe put a barrier up between the back and front seats if your dog is likely to jump across.
3. Open all the windows about 2 inches. Creates a wind flow, but not enough room for a hand to get in and get to the door locks.

As for the hotel/B&B:
1. When Kiah was younger, I used a lightweight, fold-down travel crate in rooms. Dog is secure and safe, owner can enjoy food, romantic liaison, shopping:)
2. Now Kiah is more mature, I simply make sure her bed (she sits on it in the car; I take it in to the room)is comfortable, she has water (not food - possible bathroom needs), and has a chew toy to keep her occupied. Basically, I think she just sleeps:)
3. I try not to leave her alone very long, say an hour at most.

I think you're right to be concerned, and take precautions. But, at the same time, don't worry about it too much and ruin your (and your dog's) holiday:)

Have fun!

I've been thinking about traveling solo with my dog and had these very concerns, so thanks for the article. Also, have you ever been concerned about leaving your dog alone in the car or a hotel room (if they're allowed to be alone)? I'm worried about dog theft...not that I plan on being gone for long, but it doesn't take long for something bad to happen. Just curious about your thoughts...
thanks!
