I'm pleased to present the City Hosts...

The online world is great! But offline is pretty cool too. That’s why we’ve started a network of City Hosts for Solo Traveler.

The goals of the network are:

  • To help solo travelers meet other solo travelers.
  • To grow a strong solo travel community so that the travel industry takes note and prices services appropriately for solo travelers.

Each City Host will hold a meetup or two in their home town every year helping solo travelers to connect, face-to-face, with other solo travelers.

If you want to be a Host for your home town, contact me at info@solotravelerblog.com

I started traveling solo because I didn’t have anyone to travel with, but I quickly found I love the freedom and flexibility of it. Solo travel has developed more confidence in me and helped me learn to be a bit more extroverted. Some of my favorite solo trips have been to England, Spain, Paris, Montreal, New Orleans, Puerto Rico, and of course, Las Vegas.

I’m the newbie on the team – I have travelled quite a lot, but usually in company or on organised trips.  I’m ready to branch out on my own!  I’m more than slightly terrified and I’ve never driven on the ‘wrong’ side of the road - however I am very sociable and happy to meet new people and explore new places. I’m going trekking in Nepal very soon, so training hard and practising packing light.  Photography is my passion. I also love yoga, cycling, horse riding and wild swimming – the possibilities are endless!

In 1979, at the age of 24, I left photography school and the United States (for the first time) and went to Peru.  I was an alternate boatman and chief photographer for an attempted first descent of the Pampas River in Northwestern Peru.  I lost 20 pounds, all my camera gear (including exposed and unexposed film) but came back from that trip inspired to do (whatever IT was) what I’d just done; and I’ve been doing that ever since.  All trips since then have been solo: five times (almost three years) in India; China and Tibet for four months in ’85; Bali to Pakistan in ’89; Iceland for four months in ’93; solo sea kayaking in Alaska for three months in ’92; ten times rowing my own raft through the Grand Canyon; thousands of other whitewater river miles from Canada to Washington and Oregon, California and Utah and Arizona; numerous small boat explorations in the Sea of Cortez . . . and stuff I can’t remember right now icon smile City Hosts Currently living: in Escalante, Utah (in a Basque sheepherder wagon) but have plans to move it north, to Sun Valley, Idaho, by the first snowfall of ’11

I’m Sam, been travelling solo around the world since I was 19. It’s become my obsession, and although I love meeting new faces, I have to travel solo. You simply can’t beat the freedom of being on the road by yourself. I’m in the 40′s now country-wise and I’m looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may be!

I have travelled all over the world solo and as a single parent, as well as with friends and family.I love finding unusual, interesting and yes, quirky places, people and stories and my passion is combining a love of travel with my other love, writing. It’s often fun and exciting to travel alone but it can at times be lonely and even occasionally a bit scary, so I know how important it is to have like-minded travellers with whom to share advice, adventures and exhilaration.

I think it’s pretty safe to say the only way I truly love to travel is solo. Sure, traveling with people is fun, but solo travel is the option I normally take. I took a career break in 2010, grabbed a backpack and went backpacking solo through Europe and parts of Africa. Previously, I did a month-long solo backpacking trip through Europe, and two weeks solo in Croatia. In September, I am headed to Thailand for two weeks … solo. There is something so wonderful about solo travel, the freedom it gives you to truly do what it is you love.

My travel beginnings were to Asia & the South Pacific then everywhere as an int’l flight attendant. During those years I took my first solo trips to Greece & Africa — I was hooked! In recent years I’ve gone solo to Cambodia & Thailand.
The people, opportunities & experiences that I’ve had via solo travel are amazing. I promote at least one solo travel to every young person I meet — it just makes you get outside yourself and your ‘bubble.’ Currently prepping for fundraising season & finishing the first book, and hoping for 1-2 updates later. Part of each projects’ revenue will help educate children from poverty. It’s my mission in life to become ‘Auntie Holly’ to all the kids around the globe!  The world is our oyster – let’s go get a piece!

I am a twenty-something girl who just refuses to wait around for someone crazy enough to keep me company on my many trips around the world. I’ve traveled solo in Japan, Laos, Cambodia, England, Spain and more. I love the freedom of traveling alone and I think you really learn a lot about yourself and your inner resources. Now I travel a lot with my partnert but I still really enjoy traveling solo and try hard to encourage others to do the same.
