Solo Traveler in Washington – a few of my photos

I started my visit at a Tweetup. Top is @TheAlexLop, L-R @pulpologist, me & @runawayjuno. Fabulous time!!! Thanks everyone.

I’ve just spent a whirlwind three days in Washington DC. The reason for my visit was to talk about solo travel at the Smithsonian Institute – awesome! But I did so much more.

I will have more posts on my visit here for you but, for now, I’ll give you an overview with some photos.

Machu Picchu exhibit at the National Geographic Society

This is from the Machu Picchu exhibit at the National Geographic Society – this one is free. They have some exhibits for which there is a charge.

There is no hope to offer an original shot of the Capitol Building – but, impressive none the less.

Wonderful cafeteria food in National Museum of the American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian includes native nations from North and South America as well as a cafeteria that offers much more than common fare.

outside sculptures

The Sculpture Garden outside the Hirshhorn Museum.

The Lincoln Memorial

Without doubt, The Lincoln Memorial is a powerful experience.

The Vietnam Vetrans Memorial Wall

The Vietnam Vetrans Memorial Wall is particularly poignant given that you can see yourself in the wall.

Inside the Willard Hotel

I went to the Willard Hotel for its beauty and history. For the price of a cup of coffee ($5.50) I soaked in the ambiance of the Round Robin & Scotch Bar. I’m sure many a deal was brokered there.

And the reason I was there in the first place… Joe Yonan and me speaking at The Smithsonian.

This is wonderful Janet. Yes, here’s a link to my itinerary around Lake Ontario. http://solotravelerblog.com/solo-travel-itinerary-lake-ontario/

    - Niagara-on-the-Lake (west side of Toronto, very near Niagara Falls) is quaint but very touristy. Still nice though, it just depends on what you like. There are walking paths up the Niagara Escarpment that would be great for your dog. It’s the fruit belt of Ontario and has many vineyards as well as an exceptional theater. http://solotravelerblog.com/solo-travel-niagara-on-the-lake-in-pictures/

    - On the east side of Toronto is Prince Edward County which is also wine country. It’s not quite as developed but very, very nice. Rolling hills, nice B&Bs, great vineyards and also an artist trail. Many of Toronto’s artsy people have moved there. http://solotravelerblog.com/solo-travel-prince-edward-county-pictures/

Janice: I was in the audience at the Smithsonian on Mon. eve and enjoyed your presentation and comments very much. I travel solo and sometimes with my dog. I plan to drive to Toronto with the dog and you mentioned a trip around Lake Ontario. Could you tell me of any particular places that you enjoyed? I am interested in seeing quaint cities, some treking on trails with the dog and just wondered if you can send on any suggestions of things to do that you enjoyed during your journey around the lake. Thanks, Janet b>
