Solo Travelers are Sexy
At a dinner party the other night, the discussion turned to actors; who is sexy and who isn’t. Surprisingly, the majority of the people mentioned were not really eye candy. Some were quite ordinary and even a little on the unattractive side when you had a good look. So what is it that makes people sexy?
The fundamental ingredient to sexy is something more important than looks, power or money. It’s confidence. And, I would suggest, a secondary component is being a little unconventional.
Stick with me here… I’ll get to the solo traveler part.
Paul McCartney was extremely hot as a Beatle. But, when he left the Beatles, he became bland. He was so conventional with Wings that he lost his sex appeal. Steve Buscemi, on the other hand, the guy from Fargo, the Sopranos and 30 Rock, is considered very sexy. (Not by me – I was shocked by this. But Google him and “sexy” and you’d be surprised.) And what about Madonna. Take away the makeup and lighting and you have your garden variety girl. She’d be plain if she weren’t so darn confident, unconventional and, well, sexy.
My point is, good looks do not equate to sexy. Being confident and a bit unconventional do.
Solo Travelers are Sexy
So, from these musings, I think about solo travel and followed this train of thought…
Confidence is sexy.
Being unconventional is sexy.
Solo travel takes confidence.
Solo travel is unconventional
Solo travelers are, therefore, unconventional and confident
Ergo…
Solo Travelers are sexy.
Don’t quibble with me about leaps of logic. My conclusion is what is important here and my conclusion is this: the fact that one is a bit unconventional and travels solo, and, the fact that one is confident enough to travel solo, makes the solo traveler sexy.
I’m pleased to let every solo traveler know that you are sexy. And, that the more you travel solo, the sexier you’ll get because you’ll be going more interesting places, doing more unconventional stuff and growing that sexy confidence you have.
Cheers to that!

Thanks Janice….you affirm how I view myself traveling and/or even eating out alone. I get dressed up for evening dinner, put on perfume, carry beautiful leather journal & good book. Instead of feeling uncomfortable that I’m the only person dining alone… I imagine that I’m confident, perhaps mysterious, even sexy and that people who notice me don’t feel sorry for me…they speculate on who the writer is, what is she working on, is she a restaurant critic?
I don’t like bars but I will sit at a bar at a fine restaurant and most of the time others strike up conversations with me about what I’m reading, the wine I’m ordering. It took awhile to master this but most of the time it works and I get to meet really nice people, flirt a little and have a nice meal out!

I love this, it put a big smile on my (apparently sexy) face =)
I do agree that confidence as well as intelligence / street smarts make a person sexy and those are both things that solo travellers either have when they start out, or pick up along the way from the experiences.
Great post!

I love the logic, and to provide further proof…….
I was travelling on business on Sunday night and felt like a glass of wine….to avoid horrendous room service charges, I went to the bar with my book.
After a quiet glass of wine and a chapter of my book, I suddenly found I had the attention of a group of salesmen also in town on business.
Lets just say, it has been many years since I have had that much male attention (or so many offers for free drinks!) – despite my wedding ring and frequent references to my husband!!

I like it! Much more fun (and enlightening) than plastic surgery, a new wardrobe or all the other things people do to achieve sexiness.
Thank you for the affirmation!

As I’ve traveled solo abroad for a combined 2 years, that must put me on the same level as, say, Austin Powers.

Why thank you!
I will say that I have respect for female solo travelers because there are so few of them compared to males. Any woman who can step out on her own is definitely interesting and has something to say and share.

Steve Buscemi creeps me out!
But I agree, solo traveler’s have a certain mystique, whether out on the road or at home. Solo traveling takes confidence and nothing is sexier than that!

That’s the sort of strange logic I use, and this this makes complete sense to me. Settling down does take away the sex appeal.

Steve Buscemi eh? Interesting, not top of my list (don’t remember that name coming up) but I would definitely agree that one of the intangible elements that increases sex appeal is confidence and there is nothing like world travel that builds one’s confidence and “worldly” character.
However, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance or hubris which tends to tip the scale in the opposite direction.
Great post – keep them coming!
