360 degrees of Washington Square Fountain
on a 90 degree day
Last weekend in New York City, I headed south on 5th Avenue to take a short stroll through the Village. It was a steaming hot day. Walking through Washington Square, I found children and adults playing in the fountain to beat the heat.
A bit of background: the fountain underwent a $16 million renovation from December 2007 to May 2009. The renovation was controversial as it involved moving the fountain less than 10 feet so that it would align with the Washington Arch. The park was originally established in 1827 and the fountain was first built in 1852 and replaced in 1872. A temporary arch was built in 1889 to celebrate the inauguration of George Washington and replaced by the marble structure in 1892.
These pictures were taken as I did a 360 around the fountain to catch all the excitement.
water play in fountain washington square new york city Interesting how two people who don’t know each other both have the same reaction to the spray.
Girlfriends at play in the fountain.
Lovers were there too.
And a few children too.
These tightie-whities seemed to be everywhere.
New Friends were being made - if just for an hour.
